Indian Philosophy and Psychology: A Comprehensive Research

Abstract Indian philosophy and psychology are one of the World’s oldest and most profound intellectual traditions. While Western psychology began as a formal field in the nineteenth century, Indian philosophy has been studying the nature of mind, awareness, emotions, and human behaviour for over three millennia. Indian traditions, including the Vedas, Upanishads, Buddhist Abhidharma, Jain doctrines, Yogic writings, and classical systems such as Samkhya, Vedanta, and Ayurveda, have provided elaborate theories regarding cognition, personality, suffering, well-being, motivation, and self-realization. This research article investigates the origins of Indian philosophical psychology, its major schools, mental models, and contribution to modern psychology. It also investigates how Indian perspectives—such as mindfulness, yoga, meditation, and holistic well-being—have inspired contemporary therapeutic techniques
